Whether you took part in Veganuary or not, why not choose to “Flex-Up” your diet instead so that you can enjoy the best of both worlds with plant-based dishes and meaty meals.

Many people explore the possibilities of a flexitarian diet for health and ethical reasons, among others, and it’s favoured by many because of that middle ground and because of how easy it can be to stick to. But what is a flexitarian diet?

Well, the word flexitarian is literally a combination of the words “flexible” and “vegetarian”, and as a flexitarian you would primarily stick to a plant-based diet but choose to eat meat and fish occasionally. It’s all about consciously choosing the best ingredients as part of a simple, effective diet that doesn’t rely on calorie counting or costly supplements and shakes.

The most important thing is to make your flexi diet work for you. There are no rules on how often you can eat meat and fish, it all depends on what you want to get out of your diet. Meat is also often the most expensive ingredient in most meals, and so cutting out this cost saves you a great deal of money in the long run.

One of the best ways to start making a steady transition is to cut down your meat portions, and try replacing meat with plant-based alternatives in some of your favourite recipes. You can easily turn a lot of your regular meals into vegetarian alternatives by using ingredients such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and meat alternatives like tofu. By increasing your number of meatless meals over time, you’ll find the balance you like.

Our last gateway tip is to start exploring and learning some new vegetarian and vegan recipes to get you excited to flex-up your diet!
